IntrCity SmartBus Secures Major Funding to Expand Bus Services
In a significant move to enhance intercity travel in India, IntrCity SmartBus secured $30 million in a Series D funding round, bringing its valuation to $140 million. This investment, primarily led by A91 Partners, aims to expand the tech-enabled bus platform's network across smaller towns and cities in the Indian market.
Meeting Rising Travel Demands
The demand for intercity travel in India has surged as many people migrate from rural areas to metropolitan regions for employment and education opportunities. The Indian government has increased its highway infrastructure by over 60% in the last decade, a move that complements the growing preference for road travel, particularly since the existing railway system struggles to meet this rising demand. IntrCity SmartBus is well-poised to fill the gap left by traditional transport methods, especially given the limitations in reliability and comfort of state-run bus services.
Innovative Business Model and Technology
What sets IntrCity apart from traditional bus operators is its asset-light model. The company partners with local bus operators, equipping their vehicles with proprietary technology for real-time tracking. This ensures enhanced service delivery through centralized ticket booking and optimized route planning, informed by customer demand. The buses also feature trained personnel—dubbed “captains”—to maintain safety and quality throughout each journey.
Defined Growth Strategy
According to co-founder and president Kapil Raizada, IntrCity SmartBus operates around 600 daily trips, carrying approximately 25,000 passengers each day. With a focus on overnight services, approximately 95% of the journeys cater to essential travel needs—be it for work or education—across a wide route span averaging over 311 miles. The funding will enable IntrCity to improve customer experiences further and upgrade its fleet management technology, aligning with its goal of maintaining a robust growth trajectory and reaching new markets.
The Road Ahead
The success of this venture is evident, with the startup achieving significant year-on-year revenue growth of 67%, aiming for over ₹7 billion (around $79 million) this fiscal year. As competition in the intercity bus sector heats up, with new players like ZingBus entering the market, IntrCity remains optimistic about its operational excellence and ability to deliver superior travel experiences.
